My late mums Best friend

My dad and uncle Brian grew up together and found themselves living together in community 10 in Tema as neighbours decades later. Auntie Edue and my mum Lucy became good friends in the early 70s.

I remember as a kid both uncle Brian and Auntie Edue and the Asares popping round to our house after the whole crew have had a good time at Tema Beach Club. Selina was close to my late sister Evelyn too.

As a teenager in the early 90s my mum and Auntie Edue became even closer and my home was literally her, Selina' and Robert's second home. I remember as soon as Auntie Edue came round she would ask, " Kwaku ko fa me star beer no ma mi" meaning 'get my star beer out of the fridge for her'....Because we stored her favourite Star brand of beer in the fridge for every time she come round...

Loved when she came round cos we got jokes... In my late teens every time her and mum were going out to Accra or to a party, she would let me drive them in her Datsun Bluebird... My mum would say 'sister, I feel scared when Eric drives' and Auntie Edue was say, 'just shut up Lucy, I am here, he will be fine'... Always loved that! Because she could tell my mum off...

The last time I saw her I was a married man and it was at a friend's wedding in London. My wife met her for the first time and fell in love with her bubbly personality. Auntie and I danced for good half hour or so. My wife was amazed how a lady in her late 70s could move that well.

I will miss her and her smile. She was hip... Her her soul rest in peace until we meet again.
